In the spring quarter of 2002, Victoria Ianni contacted Sigma Lambda Gamma National Headquarters to inquire about the expansion process. Seeing the need for representation of strong Latina women at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and in the Greek community she found that Sigma Lambda Gamma National Soroity Inc. best fit the ideals of a premier organization. Soon thereafter a small group of women met to create the UCLA interest group of Sigma Lambda Gamma, they called themselves "Empowered Women for Change!". On August 20, 2002, these women registered with the Fraternity/Sorority Relations (FSR) office and were officially recognized as an interest group of Sigma Lambda Gamma. These women held weekly meetings and an informational was hosted by sisters from the Epsilon Beta and Lambda Beta chapters.
The petition for chapter status was submitted in January of 2004. On February 8th, 2004 the Sigma Lambda Gamma National Board of Directors granted the UCLA Sigma Lambda Gamma Colony chapter status. On Feburary 12th, 2004, they officially became the Delta Gamma chapter.
